Helping Those In Need

In the 1950s the Somali Youth League took on an unprecedented challenge - to unite Somali people across colonially divided lands - and made unparalleled strides in exemplifying how Somali people can work politically for mutual benefit.

A similar, yet greater challenge faces the SYL today. The dividing lines are diasporic and transnational. The neo-colonial forces deepen underdevelopment, exploit natural resources, demonize Islam, and misrepresent and silence Somali people at home and abroad. Far from the optimism of the Independence era, Somali people are often disheartened, estranged from their country, language, and culture, and shaken by ongoing civil war and social dissolution.

It is the right time for motivated youth to shape a new vision to unite Somali people across the nations, and to provide new, empowering responses to divisive internal and external forces. It is the right time for SYL to build a new Somalia and diaspora.
